Bit of a dodgy subject to pick, eh? But something today…just really set the wheels turning.
I was reading Wikipedia’s article on Left 4 Dead 2 (Basically an apocalyptic zombie free-for-all), and ‘Willie Jefferson of the Houston Chronicle, after seeing initial promotional material for the game, considered that several of the infected "appear to be African-Americans" implying a racist approach to the game.’ Woah. Hold up.
Ok. In the USA over 12.3% of the whole population would describe themselves as ‘African American’. About 36.6 Million. So according to Willie Jefferson, these people don’t exist. Surely that’s more ‘racist’ than getting a general span of Americans.
Let’s turn the tables. Surely including white people in games is racist? No? No.
‘Racism’ as we know it today is usually just completely innocent statements which have been misinterpreted. I was born in California. Father, black, mother, white. Now live in South London. And before you jump to stereotypes I: 1. Am not a knife wielding ‘yobbo’. 2. Do not pronounce it ‘Saaaf Landan, nor am I a chimney sweep. At my school whenever the words ‘Black, or white’ are used, at least four people have to call out ‘Racist!’ Ridiculous.
Thing One.
